Keats-Shelley 200: John Keats on BBC Radio 4

To commemorate the life of John Keats, BBC Radio 4 will be re-airing Angus Graham-Campbell’s celebrated plays Rebel Angel and Writ in Water, which were originally broadcast on 200th anniversaries of the poet’s birth and death respectively.

Tune in on Saturday 20th November at 4.00pm to BBC Radio 4 Extra where Julian Rhind-Tutt stars as John Keats in Rebel Angel, originally broadcast on 30th October 1995, on the eve of the Bicentenary of Keats’s birthday.

The play tells the fascinating story of Keats’ transition from a medic to poet. A stage version commissioned by the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association was later performed in the Old Operating Theatre at Guy’s Hospital in 2017.

Then on Monday 22nd November at 2.15pm, BBC Radio 4 will repeat Writ in Water, which was broadcast earlier this year on 23rd February, the Bicentenary of Keats’s death, as part of Keats-Shelley 200. The play focuses on Keats’ journey to Italy and his time there. Setting off with his close friend, Joseph Severn, their journey by boat was treacherous and nearly killed them but, having finally made it there safely, they were able to enjoy a short time before illness overwhelmed him.

The time between these two BBC broadcasts was the exact length of Keats’s life.

Both broadcasts will then be available on BBC Sounds.
