Keats-Shelley House Closure 8th December 2019 - 24th February 2020

We'd like to inform our friends, followers, and supporters all over the world that the museum will be closed for restoration work from 8 December till 23 February, reopening to the public on Monday 24 February 2020.

The Keats-Shelley House gift shop and first-floor exhibition area will remain open during this time, and the temporary exhibition 'John Keats and Virginia Woolf: From Hampstead to Rome' will be accessible to visitors. Call in and see the exhibition if you're visiting Piazza di Spagna, and browse our gift shop too and see our new range of exclusive Keats-Shelley200 merchandise which will be available before Christmas in our museum gift and online shops.

The closure of the museum and library, which contains the apartment where John Keats spent the final fourteen weeks and two days of his short life, will allow time for our historic ceilings to be restored. These ceilings, with their flower motifs painted in wood, were among the very last things that Keats saw, as he reported to his friend Joseph Severn while gazing at the flowers from his bed:

"I shall soon be laid in the quiet grave -- thank God for the quiet grave -- O! I can feel the cold earth upon me -- the daisies growing over me -- O for this quiet -- it will be my first."

The restoration of the ceilings is one of the first major projects associated with our Keats-Shelley200 celebrations, which will commemorate the bicentenaries of the deaths of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, who died within eighteen months of one another in Italy two hundred years ago.

We'll take this opportunity to thank everyone who has visited this year, and hope to see many more of you in the coming months and beyond.
